Defining Power Users Without Vanity Metrics

Frequency alone rarely marks a power user. Here is a practical way to combine depth, breadth, and outcomes.

Many teams label anyone who logs in often as a power user. That shortcut hides people who use one feature heavily, teams that expand seats without deep usage, and quiet experts who work in short, intense bursts.

Start with three axes: depth (how far into core workflows they go), breadth (how many valuable features they touch), and outcome (whether their usage correlates with retention, expansion, or successful job completion).

Build provisional cohorts from those axes, then validate with interviews. If a high-frequency cohort cannot explain what they accomplish, your definition is still vanity-led.

Document the definition in one shared place so product, marketing, and success stop arguing over different dashboards.
